I am focusing on the culture of China. I am interested in the Chinese culture because I enjoy Chinese food and am fascinated by the Chinese New Year. I know that the Chinese culture is one of the world’s oldest cultures and the customs vary between the different towns and cities. I also know there are thousands of different foods and chopsticks are used as the primary eating utensil. Chinese food portions are large enough for the whole family to share. My family orders Chinese food family style takeout all the time. It is a quick and easy way to get food for the whole family to enjoy. The Chinese culture and traditions form around their family life. Through further research, I learned that along with family, the Chinese culture values Cofuncianism, an ethical and philosophical system developed from the teachings of the Chinese philosopher Confucius, and Taoism, a political and religious tradition of Chinese origin that emphasizes living in harmony. I learned China is famous for its claim as home to the most popular cuisine in the world. All different types of Chinese dishes have built up a wide range of unique local and specialized dishes with different produce, climate, regions, and historical condition. Chinese food and its preparation has been developed so highly that it has reached the status of an art form. All people in China think that delicious and nutritious food is a basic necessity of life. China stretches about 5,026 kilometers across the East Asian landmass. It is the world’s fourth largest country and is home to approximately 1.25 billion people, nearly a quarter of the world’s population. This might have shaped the larger food portions and variety of different dishes. Below is a picture of the Chinese New Year Celebration where a bunch of food was present through out the festivities.

  1. I wonder if their philosophical beliefs play into what they eat/why they eat it. I'm not too familiar with Chinese culture so this was very interesting to read.
