The Greek culture interested me because my family is great
friends with the owners of a little Greek restaurant in town. They share many different
styles of food when we come in for breakfast every Sunday morning after church.
All though we know this family I know very little about the Greek culture. As
for what I do know, holidays to them are a big deal for them, and what I hope
to learn is what type of foods they use during certain holidays. There are many
things to learn about Greek food. Greek has very many traditions when it comes
to Greek meals and making meals. Certain foods, like olives, garlic, lemons and
herbs have been the main ingredients in lots of Greek food. Religion also plays
a very important part in the Greek life. With most of them being Christian
orthodox many festivities and foods are traditions form religious holidays. This
picture shown below is a picture of the Greeks Christian Orthodox Church. Easter
in Greece is a little bit different than here in Chicago. Like us they give up certain
foods, but foods they are not able to eat during lent are meat or fish that has
blood, as well as anything that comes from an animal with blood such as cheese,
yogurt, milk and eggs. Although on Great Thursday (Holy Thursday) the Greek
culture prepares Tsoureki, which is Greek bread. This bread is only made around
Easter time in Greek. This culture focuses on this type of food because it is a
strong tradition they follow.
