It’s no secret that fish and chips are to England as the
cheeseburger is to the United States.
It’s the most popular food in England for decades, and continues to be
now. But what is it about cod and potatoes that has
made them so popular for so many years?
Well to start, English cooks and fish lovers have created a special
batter that makes the fish taste delicious, and with endless variations of that
batter, you are always getting a new and slightly different taste. On top of that, England has enjoyed an
extreme overabundance of Northeast Atlantic cod, the most plentiful fish in the
upper-European region. It is estimated
that there are 2.26 million metric tons of cod in the Northeast Atlantic Ocean,
and the United Kingdom alone catches roughly 37% of all cod caught in
Europe. The amount of cod available has
greatly impacted its popularity.
The second and often overlooked part of fish and chips is
the chips. Chips are simply deep fried
potatoes, the same as American French fries.
Similar to cod, England enjoys an overabundance of potatoes. The United Kingdom is responsible for 5.6
metric tons of potatoes each year, so it’s no wonder as to why potatoes are
used in almost every meal, and why they are used as part of the most popular
meal.

I found it very neat that Fish and Chips are still a big part of the food culture. I never knew this type of food was such a big deal! When if comes to fish I always thought that we were the ones know for all the different types of fish, but it looks like I was wrong. It surprised me that roughly 37% of all cod caught in Europe. I never knew the amount so it was nice to see that! Over all great job!
